Optical data transmission at 16.4 Tbps : Will consumer connections see an increase?

A great achievement has been made by the researches at the Alcatel-Lucent located at France. We can now see the light of our internet connection speed being increased. Alcatel-Lucent researchers have very successfully transmitted optical data at an absolutely very high rate of 16.4 Tbps (Terabits per second) over a distance of 1500 miles. Of course, this wouldn’t mean that in near future all the consumer connections will be carrying Terabits data per second. This might soon replace the existing backbone cables. It seems that to achieve such high speeds a highly linear, balanced optoelectronic photo receiver and an ultra-compact, temperature-insensitive coherent mixer were used. So, shall we expect the data rates of the consumer connection to be increased!!!!
