Google Health to store US medical records online

Google, the company that you thought was just an internet search engine, brings you Google Health, that will allow your medical records to be accessed at the click of a mouse.

Google Heath, which has now launched in beta test format, is a service that archives medical records and helps patients find medical services.

Its trial site has now gone live in the United States - and acts as a personal homepage that allows users to upload, store and check their personal information.

It also can allow users to investigate health matters, set reminders as to when to take medicine, and track how many miles a person has walked per day to monitor fitness.

The latest application from the internet giant, which it first discussed a year ago, is intended as a one-stop shop for users who want all their medical information in one place.

Perhaps one of the most useful functions allows users to gather medical records from different doctors, hospitals and chemists and keep them together.

It also allows users to inform their doctors about the state of their health - without having to take time out from their daily routines to visit in person.

However the new site is likely to provoke controversy, not least over the issue of internet security, and the actual safety of keeping medical records on the internet.

In addition, medical lobby groups are likely to point out that it could lead to a reduction in user's willingness to visit doctors and dentists, leading to a potential deterioration in health

"Personal health records is an area that's just beginning," says Roni Zeiger, Google Health product manager. "The fact that only few people are using those tools means we [the computing and healthcare industries] haven't got it right yet."

Google said it will never sell a patients information, and promises that it will only share it with a patients permission, a permission that can be revoked at any time.

Mr Zeiger added: "No Google Health user will ever find their Google Health information as search results anywhere on Google. That information is yours."

It remains unclear as to how Google intends to profit from the service in the long-term, other than by displaying adverts alongside search results, but it is possible that it will eventually charge doctors' practices and hospitals if they want to use the facility, while keeping it free for patients.

The internet search giant has plans to expand Google Health beyond the US, when it feels from a regulatory standpoint it is able to do so in each specific case.

Pentagon bans Google map-makers

The US defense department has banned the giant internet search engine Google from filming inside and making detailed studies of US military bases.

Close-up, ground-level imagery of US military sites posed a "potential threat" to security, it said.

The move follows the discovery of images of the Fort Sam Houston army base in Texas on Google Maps.

A Google spokesman said that where the US military had expressed concerns, images had been removed.

Google has now been barred from filming and conducting detailed studies of bases, following the discovery of detailed, three-dimensional panoramas online - and in particular, views of the Texan base.

"Images include 360-degree views of the covered area to include access control points, barriers, headquarters, facilities and community areas," said the defence department in a statement quoted by AFP news agency.

It said such detailed mapping could pose a threat.

Google spokesman Larry Yu said the decision by a Google team to enter the Texas base, which is in San Antonio, and undertake a detailed survey, had been "a mistake".

He told the BBC that it was "not our policy to request access to military installations, but in this instance the operator of the vehicle with the camera on top - which is how we go about capturing imagery for Street-View - requested permission to access a military installation, was given access, and after learning of the incident we quickly removed the imagery".

Individuals and governments

Military officials are currently looking into exactly what imagery is available - though it may not be able to order its removal if images are taken from public streets.

Among the popular mapping services offered by Google are Street View, which allows web users to "drive" along virtual US landscapes with ground-level views, and Google Earth, which offers detailed satellite and 3D images of locations around the world.

In this case, it was imagery offered on Street View that caused the concern.

But both have provoked complaints - from individuals depicted in the images and from governments concerned that satellite images could compromise security.

Gary Ross, a spokesman for the US Northern Command, told AFP that although such services could be useful, "there has to be a balance".

But Mr Yu said Google would listen to concerns about privacy and security.

"We try to have a compliant image removal policy - not only relative to the military but to consumers also," said Mr Yu.

"If people have concerns, they should contact us."

US to shoot-down the failed satellite today

It seems that the time has come for the filed satellite to be destroyed. US plans to destroy the rapidly decaying satellite at 2230 ET today (i.e) at 10:30 PM (Eastern time) on 20^th feb 2008. USS Lake Erie has been specially modified with two interceptor missiles and has been positioned west of Hawaii. Software changes have been made to the interceptor missiles to recognize a satellite instead of a ballistic missile. For the sake of safety a third interceptor is carried by the USS Decatur, in case the first two fails. The idea is to shoot the satellite as soon as possible to make way for further attempts if required. The missile will carry no warheads because the impact at 22,000 mph is expected to explode the hydrazine fuel tank that the satellite carries. Pentagon is planning this shoot-down at an estimated cost of 40 to 60 million dollars. It seems that the satellite is more difficult to be tracked when compare to a ballistic missile because the temperature is low and the satellite is moving at a very high speed than that of a ballistic missile. If the USS Lake Erie misses in its first attempt, then it would have to wait for a day for the next launch. The larger the time it takes to shoot-down the satellite, the harder it becomes as the satellite gathers speed. Let’s hope for the best…

Toshiba finally has surrendered to the format war. It said that it would stop making or marketing HD DVD players and recorders by the end of March. While the company is generous to support the drives sold. It said that it will continue to provide the after sales support for the 1 million HD DVD drives that it has sold until now. The notable part is that the Xbox 360 contains a HD DVD player and not the rival counterpart. No what Microsoft is going to do is an interesting thing to watch. Reason behind the victory of Blue-ray:

Warner Bros, which supported both the formats earlier, pulled its support for the HD DVD format few weeks back. The largest grocery retailer, Wal-mart recently announced that it will no longer sell HD DVDs (Read story). Few studios like, Twentieth Century Fox and Walt Disney were already in support for the Blue-ray format. With the support of electronic manufacturers like Apple, Dell, Panasonic, HP, Samsung, Sharp and the many of the Hollywood studios Blue-ray made a clear victory.

Difference between HD DVDs and Blue-ray discs:

The difference in the size is about 10GB. HD DVDs have a capacity of 15GB per layer, which is about 3 ¼ of that of a DVD. While the Blue-ray disc clear won the race with the capacity of 25GB. More capacity means more data and effectively better quality. A four layer Blue-ray disc could contain as much as 100GB of movies/data.

The manufacturing process that the HD DVD undergoes is very similar to that of a normal DVD. In fact the same machines that could be used to press DVDs can be used to press HD DVDs with a minor modification. While the Blue-ray manufacturers are required the change the disc pressing equipments that increases the initial cost for the manufacturers. Yet Blue-ray has won the war.
